Continue ShoppingChallenge:
Christ Church College Library, a renowned institution at the University of Oxford, faced a pressing need to renew the covers for their large rectangular display cases and round hat case. The existing covers were ill-fitting and failed to adequately protect the valuable contents from light exposure. The library's large windows exacerbated this issue.
Solution:
Conservation Resources, a leading provider of bespoke conservation solutions, was approached to address this challenge. Martin Stammberger, the company's General Manager, worked closely with Archivist Gabriel Sewell to develop a tailored solution.
Key requirements for the new covers included:
Softness: To prevent damage to the delicate contents of the display cases.
Fire Retardancy: To ensure the safety of the library and its patrons.
Light Blocking: To protect the exhibits from harmful UV rays and fading.
After careful assessment, Conservation Resources proposed a custom-made fabric solution. The chosen material was not only soft and fire-retardant but also capable of effectively blocking light.
Process:
Measurement and Design: Precise measurements were taken of the display cases and hat case. A detailed drawing was then created to guide the production process.
Material Selection: A range of suitable fabrics was presented to the library staff. After careful consideration, red material was selected for the display cases and green for the hat case to complement the existing collection.
Sampling and Refinement: A prototype cover was produced to ensure the perfect fit and functionality. Minor adjustments were made to the design, including the addition of corner flaps for added protection.
Production and Delivery: Once the final design was approved, the covers were manufactured and delivered to the library.
Result:
Conservation Resources successfully delivered a bespoke solution that met the specific needs of Christ Church College Library. The new covers not only improved the appearance of the display cases but also provided superior protection for the valuable artefacts within. This project showcased Conservation Resources' expertise in providing tailored conservation solutions to meet the unique requirements of cultural heritage institutions.
A New Product Opportunity:
The success of this project led to the identification of a potential new product line. The custom-made fabric solution developed for Christ Church College Library could be adapted to meet the needs of other institutions with similar requirements. This case study demonstrates Conservation Resources' commitment to innovation and its ability to develop innovative solutions to preserve cultural heritage.
