Used dry, Smoke Sponges are highly effective for the removal of soot from smoke damaged material, especially books and ephemera. One leading prints and drawings restorer explained how by cutting thin wedge shaped slivers from our larger Smoke Sponges it had been possible to remove fine dirt and debris from works of art on paper, especially old master drawings. In much the same way small slivers cut from smoke sponges are being used to clean layers of dirt and debris from paintings on canvas, from philatelic material, banknotes and architectural drawings.
Smoke sponges are an effective cleaner of hand coloured maps, bill posters, lampshades, textiles, furniture, and sculptures.
